Anguilla - one of the Leeward Islands, in the West Indies. It is east of Puerto Rico. Area: 91 sq km (35 sq mi.). Long, flat, and skinny, Anguilla looks like an anchovy—indeed, the word is Italian for "eel," a nickname reportedly bestowed on the island by Christopher Columbus when he cruised past in 1493. Anguillans are polite and easy to get to know. Industrious and hardworking, many toil at several jobs, helping each other during hurricanes and drought. Many who were born in Anguilla work abroad and send money home. Since Anguilla never had a big plantocracy, the shadow of slavery doesn't hover; hence, there are few racial tensions and little class pretension. Anguilla is the sort of place where both the British governor and the hotel clerk ride their bikes to work. Anguillan goats, who never seem to know when to get out of the way of oncoming traffic, seem to hold the real power here. Many locals are boat-racing fanatics; in fact, Anguilla is the only British isle in the Caribbean where cricket is not the number-one sport.
