Some 86 percent of the Danish population lives in urban areas. The population of Denmark proper is 5,374,554 (2000 estimate), giving the country an overall population density of 125 persons per sq km (323 per sq mi). The capital is Copenhagen, mostly on the island of Sjolland, with a population of 487,969 (1998 estimate). Other major cities, with their 1998 populations, include the seaport of arhus, 215,587; Odense, 145,296, the capital of Fyn County; and alborg, 119,157. For administrative purposes, Denmark is divided into the borough of Frederiksberg, the city of Copenhagen, and 14 counties: arhus, Bornholm, Copenhagen, Frederiksborg, Fyn, Nordjylland, Ribe, Ringkobing, Roskilde, Sanderjylland, Storstrom, Vejle, Vestsjolland, and Viborg.
