The capital and largest city of France is Paris (population, 1999, 2,125,246; with surrounding urbanized area, 9.6 million). Marseille (798,430) is a chief port. Lyon (445,452) is an industrial center famous for its textiles, though the city's chemical industry is now more important. Other major cities include Toulouse (390,350), an industrial and trade center; Nice (342,738), a resort; Strasbourg (264,115), a Rhine River port and industrial and commercial center; Nantes (270,251), noted for sugar refining, shipbuilding, and a variety of other industries; Bordeaux (215,363), a seaport and wine and industrial center; and Montpellier (225,392), a commercial and manufacturing center. More than 25 additional cities had populations of more than 100,000 at the 1990 census.The population of France (2000 estimate) is 59,128,187, giving the country an overall population density of 109 persons per sq km (282 per sq mi). Some 75 percent of the population is classified as urban. Nearly 94 percent of the inhabitants of France are native-born, and the population is mostly white. The largest foreign-born groups are Portuguese, Algerians, Moroccans, Italians, and Turks.
