Gabon, officially Gabonese Republic (French Republique Gabonaise), independent nation in west central Africa, bounded on the northwest by Equatorial Guinea, on the north by Cameroon, on the east and south by the Republic of the Congo, and on the west by the Atlantic Ocean. The area of Gabon is 267,667 sq km (103,347 sq mi). Libreville is the capital and largest city. Gabon has a population (2000 estimate) of 1,244,192. The overall population density is 5 persons per sq km (12 per sq mi). Some 53 percent of the people live in urban areas. Much of the country's interior is uninhabited. The ethnic makeup of the Gabonese is diverse, although almost all the inhabitants are Bantu-speaking. Of the country's approximately 40 ethnic groups, most people belong to the Fang, Mpongwe, M'Bete, and Punu groupings. Europeans, mostly French, form a small but prominent minority. Pygmies are believed to have been the original inhabitants of the country, but only a few thousand remain.
