Iraq, also Irak, country in Southwest Asia, bounded on the north by Turkey; on the east by Iran; on the south by Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the Persian Gulf; and on the west by Jordan and Syria. In the rural areas of the country many of the people still live in tribal communities, leading a nomadic or seminomadic existence and keeping herds of camels, horses, and sheep.
