Lesotho, formerly Basutoland, country in southern Africa, bordered on all sides by South Africa. Lesotho is one of only two nations in the world to be completely encircled by a single country (the other is San Marino). Lesotho is mainly mountainous and has a total area of 30,355 sq km (11,720 sq mi). The capital and largest city is Maseru. The population of Lesotho (2000 estimate) is 2,166,520. The overall population density is 71 persons per sq km (185 per sq mi). The population was growing at 1.7 percent a year in 2000 Almost all the inhabitants of Lesotho are black Africans, and most are Basotho (a division of the Sotho ethnic group). There are small communities of Europeans and Asians. Only 26 percent of the population is classified as urban; most live in small villages centered in communal agricultural land. The traditional tribal structure of village life has been maintained in part through land-use control by village and district chiefs.
