Liberia, republic in western Africa, bounded on the north by Sierra Leone and Guinea, on the east by Cote d'Ivoire, and on the south and west by the Atlantic Ocean. Liberia has an area of 99,067 sq km (38,250 sq mi). Monrovia is the capital and largest city. Liberia has a population (2000 estimate) of 3,089,980, giving the country an overall population density of 31 persons per sq km (81 per sq mi). The vast majority of the people of Liberia are indigenous Africans who comprise more than 15 ethnic groups; the largest of these groups are the Kpelle, Bassa, Gio, and Kru peoples. Americo-Liberians, descendants of emancipated slaves who emigrated from the United States, make up no more than 5 percent of the population. They live mostly in coastal cities and towns.
