The population of Portugal, including the Azores and Madeira Islands, is 9,902,147 (2000 estimate). The overall population density is 107 persons per sq km (278 per sq mi). The Portuguese are a combination of several ethnic elements, principally Iberians, Romans, Visigoths, and later Moors. The people still live, for the most part, in rural villages. Mainland Portugal is divided into 18 districts for administrative purposes: Aveiro, Beja, Braga, Braganza, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, Evora, Faro, Guarda, Leiria, Lisbon, Porto, Portalegre, Santarem, Setabal, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real, and Viseu. The Azores and the Madeira Islands each constitute an autonomous region. Lisbon (population, 1995 estimate, 601,180), the capital and largest city, is a leading seaport of Portugal. Lisbon was the site of the 1998 World's Fair. Other important cities include Porto, the second largest city and seaport; Coimbra, an industrial center; and Faro, in the Algarve resort area.
