Turks and Caicos Islands, British dependency in the West Indies, southeast of the Bahamas. The islands form two groups. The Turks Islands comprise six uninhabited cays, two inhabited islands (Grand Turk and Salt Cay), and a large number of small rocky islands. The Caicos Islands comprise six principal islands, including Grand Caicos (24 sq km/9 sq mi), the largest in the dependency, and a number of islets. Total area, 430 sq km (166 sq mi). Consisting almost entirely of persons of black African or mixed descent, the population (2000 estimate) was 17,480, with an overall density of 41 persons per sq km (105 per sq mi). The Tourism industry gives Turks and Caicos its main revenue. In addition to this the islands are also a major offshore financial center. There is a small traditional fishing industry that continues throughout Turks and Caicos. On the islands of Providenciales and Grand Turk you will find International style hotel accommodations, each one has its own unique set up and surroundings.
