United States, United States of America, popularly referred to as the United States or as America, a federal republic on the continent of North America, consisting of 48 contiguous states and the noncontiguous states of Alaska and Hawaii. At the end of the 20th century, the United States was a nation of 274,943,496 people (2000 estimate) living and working within an area of 9.6 million sq km (3.7 million sq mi). This population count makes the United States the third most populous country in the world, after China and India. Nearly 5 percent of the earth's inhabitants live in the United States. Historically, this nation has attracted vast numbers of immigrants from around the globe. Yet the United States remains less densely populated than other large countries or other industrialized nations—in 2000 there were 29 persons per sq km (74 per sq mi). In 1998 more than two-fifths of the U.S. population lived in states along the three major coasts—23 percent along the Atlantic Ocean, 14 percent along the Pacific Ocean, and 6 percent along the Gulf of Mexico. The smallest numbers lived in the area between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains, particularly in the central and northern Great Plains. While the Rocky Mountain and plains states account for about half of the landmass of the United States, only 24 percent of the population resides in these areas.
